Last night our children and youth made Thanksgiving cards to be sent to the shut-in, elderly and sick members of our congregation. A Stamping Up demonstrator donated her time and materials to come and do this with our young people (she’s been coming once a year for three years now)!

LOGOS at Creekwood Christian Church in Flower Mound, TX Helps Heifer Help Others

Our mission project for the 2009-10 LOGOS year is – “Fill the Ark” for Heifer International.

There are four different “Fill the Ark” opportunities:

1. LOGOS young people will be collecting money saved from their allowance, job or extra chores in an ark bank. These will be collected at the end of March.

2. Our LOGOS table families will have opportunities to earn “critter coins” by their participation in themes and activities. We’ll be looking for adults to “sponsor” these and at the end of the year the “critter coins” will be exchanged for real money (provided by “critter coin” sponsors — kind of like sponsoring a walk-a-thon)

3. On December 2, LOGOS kids will create critter ornaments to hang on the Christian Community Action Christmas tree. Creekwood members and friends are invited to take a critter ornament and leave a donation in the marked box for Heifer International in exchange.

4. In the spring our LOGOS kids will once again be looking for sponsors — this time for a “wheel-a-thon.” They’ll be making laps on our new full circle drive on “Building Roads” night (aka Wheels Night), March 2, 2010.

Together we’ll have a grand “Fill the Ark” total to send to Heifer International to buy animals which will in turn help provide for the families and communities they help and even more important, help them become self-supporting.

Grace United Methodist Church, Coal Center, PA

From Andrea Erbrecht, Director: On Wednesday, November 4th, Grace United Methodist Church in Coal Center, PA supported Operation Christmas Child at LOGOS. The week prior, table parents discussed the project with their children and they decided on a gender and age on which to focus their box. On November 4th, globes decorated the tables and table parents brought wrapped shoeboxes ready to fill. The children brought items such as toys, small games, toothpaste, soap, and washclothes to put in their table’s box. It was a wonderful alternate activity to our weekly table game. There were enough items brough in to fill all our boxes, and then some! Our entire church traditionally supports Operation Christmas Child, so it was a natural fit to bring it to LOGOS this year. From Jeanne Kelly, Director: A few years ago we started a mission program as part of our worship direction. This year we are currently involved in collecting items to be sent to the servicemen and women. The children also made cards to be included.

The children have cleaned up the church grounds, planted tulips, made throws for the nursing homes, stuffed bears to be sent to ill children in the hospital, helped stock food at the local ministry food bank and also brought canned goods and other items for the shelves, made cards for shut-ins.

Mission is an important part of LOGOS at First United Methodist Church!

From Kathy Cramer, Director of Children and Family Life: Our LOGOS children have just created beautiful placemats using vegetable printing to send with one of the men of our church who is involved in leadership of a prison ministry weekend with the hope that the men’s hearts are softened toward their families.

For our Thanksgiving service project we are collecting boxes and boxes of macaroni and cheese to donate to the local food pantry. We were going to collect peanut butter and jelly, but had a child with a severe peanut allergy so switched to another food that is a favorite with kids.

In early December we are having a birthday party for Jesus and bringing baby food and diapers to donate to the local ministry for moms with babies who need the extra measure of love.

We are looking forward to participating in Operation Christmas Child this month. The children and members of our congregation have already been asking about it. We will send in our photos and a report after we collect our boxes. It is interesting to see how many ways the children can be involved in many types of mission projects.

From Jenny Stewart, LOGOS Director: Our LOGOS Youth just finished participating in the CROP Walk–our church raised $950! Currently we are working on Operation Christmas Child through Samaritans Purse. We are filling 54 shoeboxes. This is 7% over last year. In December we will have a giving tree for families in need in our community. Our youth will get to buy a Christmas gift for a name on the tree. In January we will be participating in Soles 4 Souls. Thanks for asking!

The Sun Prairie United Methodist Church in Wisconsin has lots of mission projects planned….. some in November, some we are PLANNING in November to implement later in the year! Some of our projects include: collecting items to send to soldiers oversees, making tags for our community’s “Giving Tree”, making “comfort mugs” to take to the food pantry (filling donations of Christmas mugs with a hot chocolate packet, a candy cane and a granola bar and wrapping in cellophane with a little note of Christmas cheer). Our High School class is doing a 30 Hour Famine, we collect items to fill “Birthday Bags” to take to the food pantry. Our middle school class is working on taking a Thanksgiving Basket to a needy family in our church. We ring bells for the Salvation Army. And the 6th grade class is making blankets for Project Linus. We’re looking forward to a busy year!!

From Cathy Bush, Youth Club Director: Making Christmas stockings and filling them for Metro Ministries in NYC is a tradition for our LOGOS program. This project takes place over several weeks in November. Ladies from our church cut felt stocking pieces according to the pattern. Children decorate the stockings using felt pieces, stenciling or puffy paints. Some ladies from the congregation come in and sew the backs and fronts together, and maybe add some ricrac that the children choose. (Great opportunity for intergenerational interaction.) LOGOS families and congregation donate stocking stuffers. Students fill the stockings and they are off to NYC for some very needy families. Our children (gr. 2-8) always look forward to this and seem to really “get” that for some who receive these stockings, this may be the only present they get. From Sue Douglas, Director: Our LOGOS youth at CPC in Waterford, VA will be participating in LOGOS Mission: Make a Difference Month! by making cards for all the “senior friends” in our church. The activity will be part of Recreation Play during the month of November. In December, our LOGOS HS youth will also be participating in the Holiday Coalition, where we will fill Christmas stockings and have them delivered to help the needy in Loudoun County. In addition, our HS LOGOS youth will visit a nursing home in Leesburg and play Christmas Bingo with the residents, bringing small presents as prizes for the Bingo winners.
